Bharat QR – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bharat QR?

Bharat QR is an initiative by the Indian government to unify all payments. Merchants are supposed to generate a QR code and display it at the counter. Customers can then scan the QR code using their smartphone to make the payment.

How is it different from other scan-and-pay services like Paytm or mVisa?

E-Wallets like Paytm are closed-loop payment systems. That means both the payer and payee should have a Paytm account for the payment to work. The same applies for mVisa and other similar services too.

Bharat QR is an open-loop payment system. It works across payment services like MasterCard, American Express, Visa,  Rupay, and UPI. If you use any of the above to make payments, you can now pay by scanning Bharat QR using your smartphone.

No more credit/debit cards. No need to carry them everywhere you go. No need to be afraid of losing or breaking the card. Chances of hackers stealing your card details are less because you hardly use them anymore!

Bharat QR is developed by National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) in collaboration with payment services like Mastercard, American Express and Visa which means that a lot of thought must have been put in sharpening the security.
